San Diego Unified School Choice 2027–28: Four Checks Before Applying

Short answer: The San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) 2027–28 School Choice priority window runs October 5–November 15, 2026. It is for families seeking a school or program outside their neighborhood school. An application does not guarantee a seat. Confirm your residence school, the district of each desired school, the order of your choices, and the daily commute before you apply. District announcement, checked September 30, 2026.

“Applying to a San Diego public school” can mean enrolling at a residence school, entering SDUSD's Choice process, or applying under another district's rules. Those are different processes. Many Carmel Valley elementary addresses fall in DMUSD or SBSD, while some high school questions involve SDUHSD. This article covers SDUSD Choice only. Start with our district guide if you are unsure which system applies, or read the public versus private guide if you are still deciding between those paths.

Do you need School Choice?

Your situationFirst stepWhat to verify
You want your SDUSD neighborhood schoolNeighborhood enrollmentLook up your complete address and ask the school about registration
You want another SDUSD school or programSchool ChoiceApply in the priority window and check seat availability and lottery rules
You want a charter schoolContact that charter schoolSDUSD says charter schools set their own enrollment procedures
Your desired school is outside SDUSDCheck that districtDo not assume SDUSD's October window applies elsewhere

Our practical recommendation is to keep the full address, residence school, and target schools in one list. A ZIP code alone does not establish school assignment.

Four checks before submitting

1. Identify the residence school. SDUSD recommends that families seeking TK Choice also pre-enroll at their school of residence. Keep that option separate from your Choice preferences, especially if your housing plans are still changing.

2. Confirm the school, program, and grade. TK Choice seats are expected to be limited. Charter schools use separate processes. SDUSD School Choice is not SDUHSD High School Selection.

3. Rank schools in your real order of preference. SDUSD permits one application per student. Priority-window applications enter the January lottery together; this is not first come, first served. Listing more than one school does not hurt your first-choice priority, but the order of your choices matters. SDUSD Choice guidance

4. Test the commute. Transportation is limited. Check pickup, after-school care, and any special-education transportation policy that applies to your child before treating a distant school as a workable choice.

Common questions

Is applying on October 5 better than applying in November?

SDUSD says priority-window applications are not first come, first served. Starting early still leaves time to correct information and confirm your school choices.

Does a U.S. passport let a child choose any public school in San Diego?

No. Residence, district boundaries, program rules, and capacity still matter. See our 92130 elementary enrollment case study for an example of why one ZIP code can contain different elementary districts.

Can an SDUSD Choice application get a student into CCA?

No. Canyon Crest Academy is in SDUHSD. Review that district's current High School Selection procedure and our CCA/Torrey Pines address guide.
