San Diego Public School Enrollment Documents: An SDUSD Example

Short answer: An ordinary U.S. passport usually does not show a parent's name, so bring an accepted birth record rather than relying on the passport alone. San Diego Unified (SDUSD), for example, also requires current proof of residence and immunization records. Older or transferring students may need prior grades, courses, and relevant support records. Identify your district from your full address first, then follow the receiving school's checklist. SDUSD enrollment requirements, checked September 30, 2026.

Families returning from China often organize passports, travel, and housing first. The school may then ask for a document that takes longer: a qualifying residence record, a readable vaccination history, or past school transcripts. Put the records into four folders before travel. This article is about the enrollment-document workflow; passport applications and vaccine-dose evaluation have their own guides.

SDUSD's district requirements list birth documentation showing a parent's name, current proof of residence, and immunization records. A receiving school can ask for additional grade-specific documents; La Jolla High, for example, lists an unofficial transcript. Do not treat this SDUSD example as a countywide rule. Our district guide helps identify the correct system; the US-born child's document checklist covers passports, birth certificates, and related identity documents in more detail.

Three common delays

The address is not settled. A ZIP code or real-estate listing cannot establish an assigned school. In 92130, elementary addresses may fall in different districts; our Carmel Valley case study shows how to check. Applying to a non-neighborhood SDUSD school is a separate Choice process.

The overseas vaccine booklet has not been reviewed. California checks immunization records at new TK–12 admissions and for students advancing to grade 7. Keep the full original record and ask the school and a qualified clinician about acceptance and any catch-up needs. San Diego County provides guidance for verifying foreign records. For the detailed translation and verification workflow, see our Chinese immunization-record guide.

Prior courses are only described verbally. A school assessing a middle- or high-school transfer may need written grades and course information. Ask the prior school for complete records early, then ask the receiving school what English translation or format it accepts. Do not assume every district requires the same certification.

Before departure

  1. Identify the entry year, likely grade, and complete residence address.
  2. Use the district's official school finder and ask the receiving school for current enrollment dates and documents.
  3. Save originals and clear digital copies in the four folders above.
  4. Ask the school in writing how to handle anything that will not be ready on time.
  5. If parents will not live locally, clarify who may register the student, receive school notices, and respond to emergencies.

Common questions

Does a U.S. citizen child still need proof of residence?

Follow the district's enrollment rules. A passport establishes identity, not residence within a school boundary. SDUSD lists current proof of residence among its requirements.

Can a Chinese immunization booklet be used?

Submit the record for school and clinical review. Do not assume that receiving all vaccines in China automatically meets California's TK–12 and grade 7 requirements. A qualified clinician should evaluate doses and any catch-up plan.

We have not signed a lease. What can we prepare now?

Collect identity, health, and prior-school records, and map districts for your candidate neighborhoods. Treat school assignment as provisional until the full address is confirmed.
