Birch Aquarium Axolotl Exhibit Opens Oct. 21: 2026 Halloween Events, Tickets and Family Tips

Short answer: The Axolotl's Garden, the new Birch Aquarium axolotl exhibit in La Jolla, opens October 21, 2026 and is included with general admission. For Halloween with kids, choose the family event Halloween Aglow on October 23 or 24; Oceans at Night on October 22 is for guests 21 and older only.

This is EdCommGlobal. We clarify one San Diego school-planning or local-support decision at a time—and turn the next step into a practical plan.

"We're flying in next year to look at schools. It's our first trip to San Diego. Where can we take our kids besides school visits?"

This guide is for two kinds of families. If you are still overseas and planning a school-scouting trip, Birch Aquarium fits into the same day as a walk around UC San Diego and the La Jolla coast, and it gives your child a first feel for the place they may live. If your child has just moved back, it is an easy plan for the first few weekends and a low-pressure place to practice English. Tickets, hours and logistics are listed below from the aquarium's own pages.

What's in the Birch Aquarium axolotl exhibit

Birch Aquarium is the public exploration center of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. The new exhibit's full name is The Axolotl's Garden / El Jardín del Ajolote, and it was created by Mexican-American artist Itzel Islas in collaboration with the aquarium.

The axolotl (ajolote in Spanish, scientific name Ambystoma mexicanum) is a salamander in the mole salamander family, Ambystomatidae, not a fish. According to AmphibiaWeb, wild axolotls live only in the Xochimilco area of Mexico City, and the species is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN.

According to the aquarium's October 12 preview, visitors will find:

  • two axolotl habitats, plus other Mexican species such as Tequila Splitfins and Blind Cave Tetras;
  • a canopy of giant cloth monarch butterflies at the entrance;
  • a larger-than-life illustration of Lake Xochimilco by Itzel Islas, which works well as a photo spot;
  • dozens of axolotl-shaped paper lanterns in different colors, handmade by the aquarium's exhibits team.

The opening starts about six months of axolotl-themed programming that runs through spring 2027. The aquarium has not published a closing date for the exhibit.

Birch Aquarium tickets, discounts, hours, location and parking

The details below come from Birch Aquarium's Visit, Plan Your Visit, and Discounts and Offers pages, all accessed October 18, 2026.

General admission. Online tickets are $34.95 for adults (13+) and $29.95 for children (3–12); walk-up prices are $39.95 and $34.95. Children 2 and under are free. The aquarium notes that online savings of up to $20 are available on select dates and times, so check the ticketing page for the final price.

Kids Free in October. From October 1 to 31, 2026, one child age 12 and under gets free general admission with each full-price adult ticket. Buy online in advance and enter promo code KIDSFREE26 at checkout. The limit is six free children per order, and the offer does not apply to special events (including both Halloween night events) or combine with other offers. These terms come from the San Diego Tourism Authority's deal page; confirm them on the ticketing page before you buy.

Other discounts. Through Museums for All, guests with an EBT (SNAP) card or a California WIC card can buy general admission for $3 per person, for up to four people per card; show the card at entry. EBT cards carry federal SNAP food benefits and WIC is a nutrition program for pregnant women and young children, so this rate applies only to families enrolled in those programs. UC San Diego students save $6 on adult admission with code UCSDSTUDENT, and seniors (62+) and military save $3. Discounts cannot be combined.

Hours. Birch Aquarium opens daily at 9 a.m. Closing time varies by season, so check the aquarium's Daily Schedule for the day you visit. Last entry is one hour before closing. The aquarium is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Location. 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla, CA 92037, on the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus at UC San Diego, on a hilltop overlooking La Jolla Shores and the Pacific.

Parking. The aquarium lot offers three hours of free parking, but spaces are limited. On weekends and event days, arrive early or carpool. Buses, RVs and trailers are not allowed in the lot.

Visiting San Diego to look at schools? A sample day

Most families on a scouting trip spend their time on school visits and neighborhoods. Birch Aquarium fits on a weekend or between school appointments. Here is a day we suggest; adjust it to your child's age and your schedule:

  • Morning: Arrive soon after the 9 a.m. opening, since weekend parking is limited. See the axolotl exhibit and the tide pools.
  • Midday to afternoon: Drive to the nearby UC San Diego main campus and walk around so your child can see what an American university looks like. Check UC San Diego's website for campus visit arrangements.
  • Late afternoon: Walk down to the beach at La Jolla Shores.
  • Short on time? Skip it. School visits, neighborhood visits and confirming enrollment steps with schools matter more on a scouting trip.

Why include it: your child gets a concrete picture of studying in America, which lands better than hearing it from parents, and you get a feel for traffic and daily life in this part of the city to compare with the neighborhoods you are considering (see San Diego Neighborhoods & School Boundaries).

How long to stay, toddlers, and whether it's worth it: our take

The aquarium does not publish a suggested visit length. The points below are EdCommGlobal's judgment to help you plan.

How long to stay. Plan around the three hours of free parking. With preschoolers, we suggest allowing 1.5 to 2 hours for the new exhibit and the permanent galleries, then adjusting to your child's energy. School-age kids who like to stop and ask questions may want longer. Halloween Aglow runs 6–8:30 p.m., so plan that evening separately.

Toddlers. A few things help families with very young children: kids 2 and under are free; the aquarium says the whole building is wheelchair accessible, with ramps at Tide Pool Plaza and the Little Blue Penguins exhibit; and it is a KultureCity Certified Sensory Inclusive venue. The site does not describe stroller policies, so call Guest Services at (858) 534-3474 if that matters for your visit.

Is it worth it? Tickets add up: a family of two adults and two children pays over $100 at full online prices. Kids Free October and the $3 Museums for All rate lower the cost substantially, and a membership makes sense only if you expect two or more visits a year. For families new to San Diego looking for an indoor weekend outing where kids also learn something, we think it is worth one visit; let your child's reaction decide whether you return.

What to look for with kids of different ages

These are EdCommGlobal's suggestions for parents. Pick one or two questions; you don't need all of them.

  • Kindergarten to 2nd grade: Ask your child to find the feathery "branches" on each side of the axolotl's head (they are external gills, used to breathe underwater). Then compare the colors of the real axolotls with the lanterns.
  • 3rd to 5th grade: Most axolotls keep their juvenile form and stay in the water their whole lives, and they can regrow lost limbs. Ask: "How can it grow a leg back?" and "Why are wild axolotls disappearing?" Pick up two Spanish words along the way: ajolote (axolotl) and jardín (garden).
  • Middle school: At home, find Mexico City and Xochimilco on a map and look up how urban growth, water quality and non-native fish affect the axolotl's habitat. Or ask why the blind cave tetra has no eyes and what that has to do with where it lives.

Just moved back to San Diego? Your first few weekends

In the first weeks, school routines are new and friendships haven't formed yet, and many parents aren't sure what to do on weekends. Our suggestions:

  • First visit: Go during regular daytime hours. In October, Kids Free saves you one child ticket. See how your kids like it before deciding on a membership.
  • Is a membership worth it? Compare the membership price on the aquarium's site with "expected visits per year × one family visit's tickets." Members also save 20% on Halloween Aglow and Oceans at Night tickets. Check the membership page for current prices and who is covered. There's no need to buy one on your first visit.
  • Practice English along the way: Exhibit signs are in English. Ask your child to read one sign and then ask a staff member one question in English, such as "How old is this axolotl?" Speaking up where nothing is graded is often easier for a newly arrived child than speaking in class.
  • Children who return at different ages: For children who come back in elementary school, a place like this mostly builds curiosity and everyday vocabulary. Students who return in middle or high school will meet words like habitat and endangered species in life science or biology, and having seen them in an exhibit makes class a little more familiar. For which grade makes the transition easier, read When Should Your US-Born Child Return to School in the US?; for what the first months back can look like, see Your Child's First Semester in America.
  • Building your list of San Diego family activities? Note the drive time from home to places you'll visit often, such as La Jolla. For daily life, see the San Diego Living Guide for Chinese Families. For how UC San Diego, which runs Birch Aquarium, shapes the city's education resources, read UC San Diego Ranks No. 4 Among U.S. Public Universities.

How EdCommGlobal can help

We are a K-12 education planning and local support team based in San Diego. For the situations in this guide, we help at two stages:

  • Before you decide: We learn about your child's current schooling and your family's plans, compare school options and return timing with you, and list what still needs to be confirmed, without rushing you into a school. If you are planning a scouting trip, we can talk through which schools and neighborhoods to see.
  • After enrollment: Within the agreed scope of service, we help newly arrived students get used to school and daily life and help parents communicate with the school and host family. See Student Daily Life Support.

We don't sell tickets or promote memberships for any venue. What a service covers, who is responsible and how to reach us are agreed before it starts. To talk it through, contact EdCommGlobal with your child's current grade and school and when you plan to visit or enroll.
