San Diego PTMS Middle School Course Guide

Recently, many parents have asked about the details of Pacific Trails Middle School (PTMS): What do 7th and 8th graders learn? What is the daily schedule like? How do they choose electives?

This article provides a systematic overview of the real learning experience at PTMS.

1. What are the Core Courses?

PTMS follows the standard California middle school core curriculum. All students have the following compulsory courses (daily or alternate days):

  • English Language Arts: Reading comprehension, writing, literary analysis. Academic requirements are substantial.
  • Mathematics: Tiered by ability (General / Honors).
  • Science:
    • 7th Grade: Focus on Physical / Life Science
    • 8th Grade: Transition to more systematic science courses
  • Social Studies / History: Includes US History content.
  • Physical Education (PE): Mandatory for all students, emphasizing fitness and health.

These courses form the "backbone" of daily learning.

2. What are the Electives?

Electives are usually chosen by students based on their preferences, and final assignments are made by the school based on availability. Common electives include:

  • Music: Auditions required for some levels.
    • Band
    • Orchestra
    • Choir / Vocal Performance
  • Sports: Students with athletic specialties need to apply in advance.
  • Arts
  • STEM & Technology
  • World Languages: Spanish I / Spanish II
  • Yearbook (Application required)
  • Leadership / ASB (Application required)

3. How Long are Classes? When Does School End?

PTMS operates on a Block Schedule, so every student's timetable is different.

  • Monday (Late Start): 9:00 - 14:40, 6 short periods, 45 minutes each.
  • Tuesday to Friday: 8:05 - 14:40, 3 long blocks per day, 90 minutes each.

Note: The school provides free brunch and snacks.

4. Academic Rigor & Tiered Teaching

Clear Math Tiering

Mainly divided into Math 7 / Math 8 and Honors Math. Placement is based on:

  • Standardized tests
  • Internal school assessments

English Tiered Teaching

Proficiency testing is conducted for non-native English speakers for placement.

At the beginning of the semester, all students take the Star Test to measure learning levels and abilities.

5. Overall Evaluation (Parent Perspective)

PTMS's characteristics can be summarized as:

  1. Clear Academic Orientation
  2. Standardized Curriculum, smooth transition to high schools like CCA / Torrey Pines.
  3. Electives are Valued, offering long-term value.
  4. High Self-Discipline Required, suitable for students with good study habits.

Note: The homework and reading load at PTMS is not light. Students with weak time management skills may need an adaptation period upon entry.
