CCA Information Night Live: Course Selection and Planning for Top Public Schools

The past two weeks have been a bustling time for all families with 8th graders, as top public high schools in the San Diego school district have begun hosting their Information Nights.
Each school's visitation event has its own unique character, with specific information sessions provided for students whose first language is not English. It is clear that choosing a suitable high school is not just a family responsibility; the school district and schools themselves are also sparing no effort to facilitate the process!
Today, we take you through the key highlights from the Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) Information Night.
1ļøā£ Core Essentials: The 4x4 Curriculum & Selection Path
During the Information Night, the school emphasized CCA's unique 4x4 curriculum structure. Unlike the traditional high school semester system, students focus on 4 courses within a single term, completing credits for 8 courses over a year.
- Course Selection: The school provided a detailed breakdown of the logic behind choosing electives and the credit weight of each course.
- Learning Pathways: Clear four-year progression paths were outlined for each core subject (Math, Science, English, Social Science).
Latest Update: Admissions counselors from CCA and Torrey Pines (TP) will soon be leading teams to visit PTMS (Pacific Trails Middle School) and CVMS (Carmel Valley Middle School) for one-on-one course selection consultations with 8th-grade students.
2ļøā£ On-Site Report: Popular Subjects & Planning Advice
The event featured information sessions for 15 different subjects. Students could choose up to four sessions to attend based on their interests. Department heads were present in their respective classrooms to provide comprehensive planning and advice regarding the four-year course trajectory for each subject.
The most popular course directions on-site remain:
- English
- Math
- Science
- PE
Both parents and children were highly enthusiastic, with many 8th graders taking the initiative to consult teachers directly. Our program students also attended sessions for their preferred courses and began their preliminary school selection and course planning based on their actual situations.
3ļøā£ A Hub of Resources: Beyond Academics
The overall impression is that CCA offers exceptional resources and a vast platform. It not only possesses the rich academic resources favored by Chinese parents but is also uncompromising in its support for student interests.
𧬠Biotech
The Biotech program was particularly eye-catching. One student in our program was extremely interested in the "collaboration project with top San Diego DNA laboratories" introduced by the teacher. This model of directly connecting high school curriculum with industry resources is a major highlight of CCA.
š Arts & Theater
The drama club is about to stage the latest Broadway hit, "SIX". Coincidentally, our children had previously seen Broadway performances in San Diego, so they had a very engaging exchange with the drama teacher.
The teacher revealed: "The school's new theater and film production studio are about to be put into use!" and warmly invited students to come watch the performance in March.
4ļøā£ Campus Vibes: Student Leadership in Action
The PAL (Peer Assistant Leadership) student representatives on campus were also very welcoming, consistently helping to guide and answer questions throughout today's event.
This "students helping students" atmosphere allowed the incoming 8th graders to feel a warm welcome and showcased CCA's vibrant community culture.
Selection Advice: Public high schools offer abundant resources, but competition is also relatively intense. We suggest that parents and children make full use of opportunities like Information Night to ask questions, observe, and get a feel for the environment to find the soil best suited for their child's development.
